Catholic United 9 - 0 Manford Way
By Thomas Kearney
HOOPS HIT NINE FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON
Catholic United made it three league wins in succession with a convincing 9-0 victory at the Len Salmon Stadium against Manford Way.
A second half hat-trick from Tony Jacobs, along with Aaron Baldwin (2), Jamie Salmon (2), Brad Vaughan & Tom Hollingsworth who completed the rout.
The Hoops opened the scoring early on, albeit fortuitously, as hesitation in defence allowed Baldwin to walk the ball in before the away side were dealt a further blow.
Having received a knock to the head, Manford Way’s centre back was forced off with concussion, & with no substitutes, Catholic ruthlessly picked off their opponents.
Shortly before half time, an in-swinging corner from Thomas Kearney was converted by Vaughan at the back post before the scorer-turned-provider as he headed back across goal from another corner for Salmon to score.
Following the break, Dan Trenkel’s side picked up from where they left off. Jacobs scored his first when he cut in from the right & unleashed a left-footed shot past the despairing opposition goalkeeper.
Baldwin then grabbed his brace - his fifth in four starts for the club - before Salmon replicates the feat with a sublime half-volleyed effort from the edge of the box & into the far corner.
Striker Tom Hollingsworth deservedly made it onto the scoresheet having been denied by the woodwork on multiple occasions when his curling effort made it seven.
Jacobs rounded off the afternoon to score his first treble & although they remain eleventh in the table, victory went a long way to moving the Hoops towards a positive goal difference following a disastrous opening to their title defence.
Circumstances didn’t fall for the visitors on this occasion - all the best for the rest of the season.
Next week sees Catholic face a tricky away trip between Christmas & New Year to tenth placed Springfield who will be buoyed by an impressive 3-2 away at Bishop’s Stortford Swifts.
